With all this talk of our class reunion, the memories of growing up on Lanai keep rushing to the forefront of my mind. I really think that we are so blessed to have grown up on Lanai and to have been a part of a "small" school. I mean I'm so excited about our upcoming reunion, where my hubby - who grew up in California, can't say the same thing as he hasn't been in touch with any of his school friends - pretty much since school...
I can't wait till we're all together in one place and looking around the room, trying to figure out whose who! To see how we've all changed and how some of us may still look the same.
Jason, Akido classes!!! I remember it well, its like I can smell the straw from the mats as I'm writing this. Band classes - concerts - bake sales - oh and the car accident that Marilyn got into! Yeah, I think I'm still paying the price for that injury! Man I got into sooooo much trouble with my mom for hanging out with Marilyn! I remember our homecoming events - all of us getting together to work on the floats - I think I still remember how to make carnations out of Kleenex! Picking pineapple during the summers - I wish that my kids were able to be a part of that - doing hard labor during our teenage years I think laid a really good foundation. Not that I really enjoyed it, but hey I still have people stare at me is surprise when I tell them that I use to pick pineapple!!!
The class of 1979's class reunion is going to be so AWESOME!!!

Reunion Thoughts
It's hard to believe its been almost 20 years...seems like 30 (Sorry brudah Joe, couldn't help it). I'm wondering what everyone looks like, will I be able to recognize anyone? Before I moved up to Oregon, I would see Val, June, Charles and Joe on rare occasions. By the way is the Columbia still open? I was talking with Robin about favorite places to eat and that was one of our favorites. Okay, I'm off subject.
Over the past few years, while working at CBS radio, the music our station played would bring me back to our High School Days. For me it was Physical Fitness and our 4:00am workouts everyday in the gym. Working on the yearbook and ended up having to develop and print all photo's because no one else knew what to do. I remember getting home around 2:00am the next day and I had to get up in two hours!
Going to Molokai for the Cross Country races and the "course marshalls" who were students sent me on a wild goose chase and pointed in the wrong direction on the course.
I remember heading for Corozon's house and asking if "Boz" was home, building our pull up bar in Mr. Chester's class and hit Jose with the arc welder! Shocking! After band practice, we'd all go on a drive up to the cemetary. All of us packing into Leonor's station wagon and go cruising, remember it was lifted and mag wheels? Jonie Hera chasing cats with her car. Hmmm...what else...Marilyn getting into an accident the day she got her license. I think it was a tree that jumped out in front of her. Going over to Rocky's house and him saying "lets see who can get the engine out of these jeeps first".... I was half way done until I realized, I think I just got taken. Get me to take out one, which would be one less for him to do! You da man Rock!
I remember Jodie Ribucan punching out Mr. Hokama's window after I wanted to "break up" with her. (had second thoughts after that) My dear brother on ways he amused himself and people would think I did it. Hello! There's a bit of a height difference and can't miss the "Afro" he was sporting. Val and I taking Aikido from Mr. Inaba, I loved working out there, but was upset that our Senior year made it more difficult to go to practice. (Val, by the way, I still train and teach kids at the Tigard Ai Ki Kai Society. So funny, I have kids who were like Quay Chester. I received my black belt back in 1988. By the way, is he still around? Mr. Inaba that is.
Only recently did I tell my parents about the "party" we had when Dad, Mom and Tracy were on Kauai for Menehune Basketball. If I remember, Claude had a big bottle of Vodka from his sister wedding the week before, so Don, Kimo, Cedric (I think it was Cedric), Juan Neflar, Claude and I drank mostly the whole night and got very drunk! Juan was freaking out and Donald so Donald knocked him out! I think that was around the time when I put a hole in my Dads work room and we all went to the house above and stole the door to replace it! Had to put it back, because it didn't fit!
So much fun, one day I'll tell you about putting "Nair" in Len's shampoo because she "narked" on me. That was not good.....

Reunion Thoughts
Have all of you been thinking about our class reunion next year? What comes to your mind first? For me, it is those classmates I have not seen since graduation. I think the fact that we are a lot older makes you wonder how he/she looks like. Of course, with age I seem to have less hair on the top. Almost "Bolo-head". Nah, just thinning out and having the grey look.
For the most part, I start to reminisce about high school and how fortunate to have a close knit class. I have talked to people from Pearl City High and on their class reunion, they only hung around people they knew. Which is 10 people out of 700.
All of our lives has changed, and we all took different paths to end up where we are today. I would like to hear from all of you; on your thoughts about our upcoming class reunion? What are you looking forward to? Do you have funny stories from "back then" that you would like to share?

What Have You Been Up To Since Graduation?
Well, I guess it's my turn. Well my Summer vacation after we graduated wasn't as long as I expected. A week later my head was shaved and in San Diego going through Boot Camp. After my "Summer Vacation" I was stationed back in Hawaii at Kaneohe Marine Corps
Air Station for the next 4 years, attached with VMFA 235 (Marine Fighter Attack Squadron). To pass the time, I went back to school for a few reasons; to get my degree and it helped with promotions. In 82 I married someone from back home and we had a girl together, at the same time I was transferred to North Carolina and became shift leader to Service Company, Camp Lejeune.
Back in 86 I moved back to Hawaii and was stationed at Camp Smith until 1990, where I left active duty to pursue school again, got a divorce and searched for a new job in the civilian world. In 1993 I completed my degree in Business/Marketing and returned to the Marine Corps as a reservist. I was then hired as the Marketing Director for Consumer Tire Warehouse. Remember "Go Now Hawaii, Why Pay More?" After Malcom Love passed away, they needed someone to design a marketing plan to get them back in the consumers eyes again. My first task was to find a spokesperson who was popular and would be a good fit with the company. That's when I met Mike Sakamoto with "Fishing Tales". Part of the campaign was to get back on TV and produce a commercial with him. I remember Mike asking me he needed a "side kick" for the commercials and for me to find one, I would need to invest more money! I told him I'd be his sidekick and we did a bunch of commercials during 1996. Maybe you seen them, with Mike fighting a "fish" on the sea and a tire jumps out of the water? Or the "Favorite Fishing Spot" I had a lot of fun working with him. Then HonPub wanted me and I worked for Honolulu Publishing/Honolulu Magazine until I left for Oregon in 1997 to accept a job with a Portland publishing company.
Since then I bounced back from job opportunity to job opportunity. I worked briefly as a sub contractor for a custom sign company (which was a nightmare) and a job I really enjoyed was with CBS. I worked in broadcasting and sales and during my time there met many artist who have come by the studio's. Danny Bonaduce (awesome guy!), Mark Lindsay (founder of Paul
Revere and the Raiders) spent many nights drinking with him, Kool and the Gang (I called June during that concert so she could her the music "Jungle Boogie") War, Doobie Brothers, Neal Diamond, Beach Boys and many more. I had so much fun there but the driving and hours were killing me and one thing I noticed about people in radio, they sure drink a lot! In March of 2007 I accepted a job back in publishing for a newspaper and managing the retail sales and as an Associate Publisher. It's a lot closer to home and the commute is a little better than before.
I married an Oregonian who at the time was living in Hawaii and we have been together for 18 years! We have two kids, our daughter Taylor (16) and son Hunter (14). They are both musicians who play the keyboard, bass guitar, drums. (I see a garage band in the future, gawd help us!)
I just celebrated my first year with the newspaper and I have to say, it's been a lot smoother than back in radio (I still miss it) but my wife said, "No Way" am I going back to the "darkside". I'm also still in the Reserves and drill out of Mirramar, CA. but I think I'm about burned out on that too. (I've been skipping drill) I need to concentrate more on my current job than being a "weekend warrior" where I work as an Air Intelligence Officer - Targeting.
My friend just retired because of the same reason, is now an associate principal at a local High School in Tualatin, OR. So I think it's time. I think it's great how we all have reconnected after 29 years. If it wasn't for the internet, I don't think we've had as much success on connecting as we are now. I look forward to seeing all of you again in Vegas in 2009!

What have you been up to since graduation?
If your like me, you've probably seen a few of your small kid time / classmates a few times in the last 30 years... I thought this would be a great way to kind of catch up with each other. So the question is: What have you been up to since graduation way back in 79??? Well...
I got married and had two boys, Travis (26), Zachary (24), I lived on Lanai until 1985 - divorced - moved to Oahu for a bit then moved to San Francisco, CA. I met my DH Mark shortly after arriving in SF and we got married in 1988. We lived in the Bay Area for 18 years, had two kids, Brittany (18) and Marcus-Lee (16). While there I worked as a secretary for many years and then ended up managing a law firm in SF before moving to Maui in December of 2003. I also have two beautiful granddaughters, Theresa (7) and Alizae (5) we also have one more granddaughter on the way and she will be joining our family in June.
I miss living on the mainland - well actually what I really miss is the convenience of it all. I loved being able to get in a car and just drive... Also the convenience of having options of finding an item - not here, oh well lets just drive down the road and see if they have it. One of my favorite places to visit has got to be Disney Land - I am a HUGE fan of Goofy and just love getting on all of those rides. In fact we are planning to celebrate our 20th anniversary at Disney World later this year.
Maui is great and is growing all the time, so much has changed since our days of coming over for band trips. I still remember our days of staying at the Armory, I look back and I think man, we had some great times!!!
Anyway, I can't wait to hear more about what you all have been up to, so come on in join in on this blogging thing. NOTE: this is the first time that I've ever done a blog.
